3 Bathroom Habits Affecting Your Plumbing

bathroom habits

Is your plumbing suffering because of your bathroom habits? Fix these problems fast.

Are your bathroom habits causing problems you need a plumbing expert to solve? Clogged toilets, dripping faucets and slow-moving drains are often the result of behaviors homeowners don’t realize will lead to trouble. Make sure you’re not sabotaging your home with one of the following restroom routines:

1. Over-tightening the Faucet Handle

Eventually, the washers in your tub and sink faucets will wear out. If you respond to a slight drip by turning the handle to the faucet even harder to shut it off, you'll only wind up wasting more water. The pressure will crack the washer even farther until it's literally falling apart and incapable of stopping the flow. Replace the faucet washer as soon as you notice a leak. This will waste as little water as possible. Alternatively, you can call in a pro. Replacing a washer on your behalf will be much more affordable than replacing a damaged faucet.

2. Flushing the Toilet with the Lid Open

Flushing the toilet with the lid open will spread urine and excrement throughout your bathroom. The flush can spread these materials as far as six feet from an open toilet bowl. However, there’s another important reason to keep the lid closed as often as possible. Items placed on the top of a toilet tank - bottle tops, hair ties, toys, coins - are commonly the cause of serious clogs. It’s easy for the rumble of a toilet flush to shake items from the tank cover into the toilet bowl, and before you know it, the item is stuck and water is overflowing all over your floor. Close the lid before you push that lever to save potentially hundreds of dollars.

3. Allowing Hair to Invade Your Drain

When hair combines with bulky, oily drain residue, it creates a recipe for disaster. Hair catchers cost just a few dollars, but homeowners sometimes shy away from installing them on their own. Hiring a professional to do it for you costs a minimal amount compared to what one can save you.

“ Friday after Thanksgiving we had a flooding toilet…upstairs. I called Dependable Service Plumbing & Air and they told me that only one plumber was working and he would try to stop at our house on his way between jobs. William the plumber showed up with a smile and a calm and professional attitude. I was so relieved. He fixed the leak and a sink too. Thankful we are for Dependable Service Plumbing & Air. ” –-Samuel I.
