4 Secrets to Avoid Frozen Pipes This Winter

4 Secrets to Avoid Frozen Pipes This Winter

The winter season is a fast approaching, and we all know that the weather usually gets bitterly cold. Worse still, if your home is prone to frozen pipes, then it means acting in advance because it's a disaster in waiting. Dependable Service reveals the tips to prevent your pipes from freezing.

Preparation Is King

A stealth secret to preventing your pipes from bursting during the unapologetically cold weather is to have prevention mechanisms in place. Locate the shut-off valve for the exterior water piping. Once the winter season begins, you should turn off the water supply for all the piping system you’ll not be using during the winter season.

Drain and Open All the Plumbing System

When the temperature of the water inside the pipes gets too extremely frigid, it converts into ice. The problems start when the ice water retained inside the pipes starts to expand while the size of the pipe remains unchanged. With time, the pipes will surrender to the intense pressure and rupture. Be sure to drain your pipes in the areas prone to freezing such as the swimming pool and the garden sprinkler system way before the onset of winter.

Turn On the Thermostat

It isn’t time to worry about the energy bills. Maintain your thermostat at 65°F at all times. Also, when leaving the house for long hours, consider shutting down the water supply from the main valve.

Insulate

Frozen pipes can cause more disaster than you can imagine. While you can cut off the water flow to the irrigation system and the swimming pool, there are those exterior areas that lack heating, but they still need the water supply. For instance, regardless of the season, water is a requirement in the basement and garage. Insulate the water pipes to prevent the temperature of the water in the pipes from plummeting too low.

“Dependable Service Plumbing sent a pressure washing company out to clean my entire driveway, when only three small spots were unintentionally put on the corner of my driveway when my neighbor was having a replacement water heater installed. Tommy, the owner of Dependable Service Plumbing, came out to look at my driveway right away, and he had Winston out to clean not only the spots off, but my entire driveway, including my front porch. Winston was very professional, as he explained the difference in concrete between my driveway and my front porch. He also explained the reason for some bad rust stains that were there as a result of metal objects that were mixed into my driveway concrete by my builder. He did an excellent job on everything, and my driveway is now clean enough to have it coated with a light concrete paint (two coats) that I had already contracted out to have done. Caretaker Services Pressure Washing did such a good job of cleaning (about 2,200 lbs. pressure on my driveway & about 400 lbs on my front porch with a household cleaner first) that my coating contractor told me that what is left of my rust stains will all be covered over by the light colored paint. I am very pleased, as he gave me a great education along with a great cleaning job! Also, I will now use Dependable Service Plumbing as my plumber for all my future plumbing needs, as they did a great job for my neighbor!” –-Bill B.
