Does My Home Have A Gas Leak?

Dependable Service

A gas leak in your home has the potential to be deadly. If you notice any of the following signs of a gas leak, immediately take your family and pets, leave the home and go to a neighbor’s house, if possible. If your vehicle is in your garage or near your home, do not risk starting the vehicle! The number 1 rule of gas leaks is safety first! Here are 5 signs you can look for if you suspect a gas leak:

  1. Rotten egg smell – Natural gas providers add sulfur to help make gas leaks easier to detect. If you sniff and smell rotten eggs, you may have a gas leak.
  2. Hissing sound – If you have gas appliances, take a good listen to see if you hear a hissing or even a faint whistling sound near any of your gas appliances. Very small gas leaks may not always be detectable by smell. A hissing sound near your gas appliances is a sign of a potential leak.
  3. Feeling ill – If you and/or other members of your family experience headaches, dizziness, feeling faint, nausea, fatigue or trouble breathing inside the home that goes away when you leave, your illness may be a reaction to a gas leak. Also keep an eye on pets, particularly birds, as they are often first to display effects from exposure to gas.
  4. Dead plants – Plants that previously thrived suddenly wilting and dying is an often overlooked sign of a potential gas leak. Like some pets, plants are particularly sensitive to gas exposure and may show damage before other signs are noticeable.
  5. Bubbling mud – Gas leaks can happen just outside the walls of your home as well – and can be just as dangerous. If you notice mud or moist soil along the outside wall of your home that is bubbling, it’s time to call a pro to check the lines going into your home.

A gas leak is always serious, no matter how minor you may think the leak is. Even very small amounts of gas build up in the home, making people and pets sick, and increasing the risk of explosion. If you notice any of these 5 signs of a gas leak, do not delay and leave the home right away! At DS Plumbing, your family’s safety is our top priority!

customer review

“Dependable Service Plumbing & Air sent a pressure washing company out to clean my entire driveway, when only three small spots were unintentionally put on the corner of my driveway when my neighbor was having a replacement water heater installed. Tommy, the owner of Dependable Service Plumbing & Air, came out to look at my driveway right away, and he had Winston out to clean not only the spots off, but my entire driveway, including my front porch. Winston was very professional, as he explained the difference in concrete between my driveway and my front porch. He also explained the reason for some bad rust stains that were there as a result of metal objects that were mixed into my driveway concrete by my builder. He did an excellent job on everything, and my driveway is now clean enough to have it coated with a light concrete paint (two coats) that I had already contracted out to have done. Caretaker Services Pressure Washing did such a good job of cleaning (about 2,200 lbs. pressure on my driveway & about 400 lbs on my front porch with a household cleaner first) that my coating contractor told me that what is left of my rust stains will all be covered over by the light colored paint. I am very pleased, as he gave me a great education along with a great cleaning job! Also, I will now use Dependable Service Plumbing & Air as my plumber for all my future plumbing needs, as they did a great job for my neighbor!” –-Bill B.
