Smart Water Heaters: Is Your Water Heater Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

By now, most people have heard of “smart homes” that notice when no one is home and adjust temperature or turn on lights automatically when it gets dark out. Did you know that you can get a smart water heater too? The humble water heater may seem so simple that you wonder what can be truly smart about a water heater. What can a smart water heater even do?

When discussing smart water heaters, we’re generally talking about storage tank style water heaters though other styles may have smart features as well. The standard storage tank style water heater is still the most common in the United States so it makes sense to focus smart technology there to start with. Smart water heaters come equipped with various sensors and options that are very useful. Here are just a few of the interestingthings a smart water heater can do for you.

  1. Remote Temperature Adjustment – Smart water heaters connect to the internet, allowing you to adjust the temperature from an app on your phone. You can turn down the heat while away at work for the day to save energy by having a lower temperature the heater must maintain for water in the storage tank. And if you head out for that family vacation and forget to turn down the temperature, you can even put your water heater into vacation mode while out on the open road.
  2. Pattern Learning – Some smart water heaters feature programs that “learn” your water use habits over time. Once the system records the pattern, it uses that information to shift into energy saving mode during times when you are less likely to need hot water.
  3. Mechanical Self-diagnosis – Sensors allow smart water heaters to monitor for and diagnose mechanical problems, sending you a notification and giving you valuable information to fix problems before they become major failures.
  4. Leak Detection – Smart water heaters use sensor technology to detect water leaks and sound the alarm to keep a small drip from becoming a damage-causing flood.
  5. Self-Cleaning – One of the biggest causes of wear and tear on water heater units is build-up of sediment. Smart water heaters can monitor sediment levels and activate self-cleaning features to remove sediment and extend the lifespan of your unit.

Brands like GE, Kenmore and Whirlpool are already bringing smart water heaters into homes, with many other major manufacturers joining the smart water heater market with the latest innovations. There are even smart devices that can be “retrofit” to your existing water heater to add some smart technology features until it is time to replace your unit. So, how smart is your water heater? “Requested an appointment online – got a call back very shortly (on the weekend!) to schedule for early next week. Tech arrived right when he was supposed to, we went over my issues, came up with a plan of attack, and he got to work. I got busy doing other things around the house, and about an hour later asked me to come check things out. Bill was very reasonable, and was written up and emailed to me while on-site. Paid with a credit card on their tablet (very cool!) and he was on his way.” –-Mike S.
