Guide to Tweaking Your HVAC and Bedroom for Your Best Night Sleep Yet

Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your overall health.  If you would like to improve your night’s sleep, there may be several tweaks you can make to your HVAC unit or bedroom that can help you sleep a little better.  Adjusting your thermostat, fans, humidifiers or dehumidifiers may help you obtain the perfect night sleep. 


Your body naturally starts reducing your body temperature the closer you get to bedtime.  Your overall body temperature reduces by 1 to 2 degrees while you are sleeping.   The cooler temperature allows you to relax and sleep so much better. The National Sleep Foundation suggests setting your bedroom temperature between 60° and 67° Fahrenheit for optimizing your sleep. 

This is easily done during the winter months and can save you money on heating costs.  During the summer months, it becomes slightly harder due to the cost associated with keeping your AC set between 60° and 67° Fahrenheit.  Another way to help keep your bedrooms cooler is to use fans to help reduce your overall body temperature. 


Fans can help provide you with a more comfortable room to get a good night’s sleep.  The downdraft from a ceiling fan creates a cooling effect on your skin during the night, helping you stay comfortable and keep your overall body temperature lower. 

In addition to the cooling effects, a fan can provide a humming noise that can be soothing to you.  This noise can help you fall asleep and keep you asleep as it helps to muffle middle-of-the-night sounds that could wake you up. 


Another option is to have a zone-control air conditioning system installed in your house.  This allows you to set different temperatures in a number of rooms while helping keep your energy cost in check. 


If the humidity in your bedroom is too high, it can make it feel muggy, sticky, and make it harder to breathe and relax.  However, a room that is too dry can make your throat and nasal passages scratchy and impact your overall night’s sleep.  It is very important to get the humidity level just right so you can get the best sleep possible.

Using an inexpensive digital hygrometer, you can measure the humidity level in your bedroom.  It should read 45 to 55 percent as this will give you the best night’s sleep based on the moisture in your room.  By using a small humidifier or dehumidifier you can get the numbers to be closer to that range.
