Is Your Heating and Air Conditioning System Older?
If you have an older R-22 system, now is the time to upgrade to a newer, more efficient model today!
R-22 refrigerant is currently being phased out of production. As of 2020, it is now illegal for manufacturers to make or import this product to the United States. The supply of R-22 is dwindling and becoming more expensive each day. If you have an older R-22 HVAC system and have an issue with it, there are options for you.
Why is R-22 Being Phased Out
R-22 contains HCRCs (greenhouse gases) which makes it a great refrigerant but if it is released into the environment, it can cause damage to the ozone layer. Based on environmental factors, governments have agreed to reduce the use of materials containing HCFCs. The final phase out of R-22 began in January of this year and is no longer being manufactured or imported.
What if I have an old R-22 System
As long as you do not have issues with your system, your R-22 HVAC system will continue to run as it always has. However, if your system develops a refrigerant level issue or there is a leak, you may want to consider a new system. R-22 price is on the rise and as the demand increases but the supply decreases, the price per pound of refrigerant continues to soar. Depending on the exact issue, it may be best to replace your system with a new more efficient model vs. spending a lot of money maintaining a unit that is older and may develop additional problems.
