Your Heat Pump Can Fail, Causing a Sky High Electric Bill

When your AC goes out, you know rather quickly as it quits cooling your house and you immediately start feeling the temperature rise inside.  When the heating element fails in your heat pump the heat strips will take over, but you may not know for several weeks that this has happened.  Often times the first sign is an extremely high electric bill, however there are several other signs and symptoms to look out for. 

Backup Heat Strips, What Are They

Your heat pump has a back-up heating system which helps keep your home warm during the cold months.  The electric heat strips are located inside your air handler and they are a back-up/boost system for the heat pump.  They typically kick in when the temperature in the house is 3 – 5 degrees cooler than the set temperature on the thermostat. It is normal for them to kick in from time to time but not normal for them to run all the time.  Some thermostats will let you know the heat strips are on by reading “Auxiliary or Emergency” heating. 

Signs and Symptoms of Heat Pump Failure

There are several signs and symptoms that you can look for before you receive an extremely high electric bill. If you see or experience any of the following signs or symptoms, you heat pump may need to be repaired or replaced:

  • Your house is being heated but the outdoor condenser is not running
  • The temperature in your house is 1 – 2 degrees cooler than the set temperature and the thermostat is reading “Auxiliary heating”
  • Your heat pump is constantly tripping breakers
