As our Temperatures Dip, Our Water Heaters Feel the Strain

When temperatures outside dip, it has an effect on not only you, but also your home and the comfort you feel in your home.  In particular, your water heater can be tasked during colder spells often times causing them to fail.

Water Temperature and Your Water Heater

As the air temperature drops so does the ground temperature.  This causes the water flowing through the water mains underground to also cool off, resulting in cooler water coming into your house and water heater.  If the water is colder than normal coming in, it takes longer for the water heater to heat up that water, causing your heater to work harder each time you request hot water in your house.

Other Factors Regarding Your Water Heater

There are several other factors that affect your water heater in the winter months as well.

  • Age of the Unit – Age plays an important role in your water heater.  Most water heaters last approximately 7 – 10 years before they need to be replaced.  If you have an older unit, heating colder water can add to the strain on the unit and cause failure.
  • Sediment Buildup – If you have not had your unit properly flushed each year, colder water causes the unit to run harder and longer impacting the life of the unit when there is a lot of sediment sitting in the bottom of the tank.  It is important to flush your tank once a year to help with the life of the unit.
  • Hot Water Usage – The more hot water you use, the more of a strain it can put on your tank.  Reducing your usage on the coldest days can help with that strain.

customer review

“Requested an appointment online – got a call back very shortly (on the weekend!) to schedule for early next week. Tech arrived right when he was supposed to, we went over my issues, came up with a plan of attack, and he got to work. I got busy doing other things around the house, and about an hour later asked me to come check things out. Bill was very reasonable, and was written up and emailed to me while on-site. Paid with a credit card on their tablet (very cool!) and he was on his way.” –- Mike S.
